Matthew 20:24-28

Ambition can fracture a team faster than poor strategy.

The moment recognition becomes the prize, collaboration starts to erode.

Servant leadership: greatness without domination offers a harder, more durable standard. In a tense moment between competing followers, an experienced leader reframed leadership away from status and control and toward responsibility. Authority was not erased; it was repurposed. The real measure of influence became the willingness to use power to help others do their best work.

That distinction matters in modern organizations. A leader can still set direction, make unpopular calls, and hold a high bar without turning the team into an audience for ego. You see the difference when a manager spends political capital to remove blockers, protects focus in a noisy quarter, or shares credit instead of centralizing it. Service is not softness. It is disciplined power aimed at the mission and the growth of people.

Try one practical move this week: ask your team, or two direct reports, "What is getting in the way of your work most right now that I could remove?" Then solve one obstacle within five days.

In your daily leadership, are you more driven by being recognized, or by using your power to make other people's work and growth easier?
