Matthew 16:13-20

Many leaders say they want empowered teams.
What they often want is faster execution without giving up control.

Empowerment and succession: authority entrusted to those who grasp the mission is not a slogan about delegation. It is the discipline of recognizing who truly understands the purpose, the decision criteria, and the stakes, then trusting that person with meaningful responsibility.

In modern leadership, this is where authority becomes scalable. A manager who keeps every strategic choice on their desk may look indispensable, but usually creates delay, dependency, and fragile growth. The stronger move is to identify the person who already thinks from the mission, not just from task completion, and let them carry part of the weight.

This can be very practical. Choose one team member who already shows sound judgment. This week, transfer one decision that still depends on you. Define the objective, the limits of autonomy, and what only needs to be reported after the fact. Then spend 15 minutes reviewing how they decided and what support would help them take on more.

Have I been distributing authority based on real understanding of the mission, or centralizing because I still need control, visibility, or indispensability?
