When Work Finds Its Why

· Matthew 4:18-22

Disconnected work drains teams faster than hard work. Jesus shows a leader’s task: translate mission into each person’s role, so today’s effort points toward a purpose worth carrying.

Matthew 4:18-22 — cover

Most teams are not exhausted by work alone.
They are exhausted by work that feels disconnected.

Purpose (why): connecting today's work to a larger mission is not a branding line for the all-hands deck. It is a leadership discipline. People commit more deeply when they can see how what they do today changes something that matters tomorrow.

That does not mean turning every task into a speech about vision. It means translating mission into the language of the role. A strong leader does not erase routine work; they reframe it. The analyst is not just closing the month. The report improves decisions that affect customers, cash flow, and team confidence. The operations manager is not just fixing delays. They are protecting trust and keeping the promise the company makes.

A practical exercise for this week: pick one person on your team for a 15-minute conversation. Name one strength they already demonstrate well. Show what larger mission that strength can serve. Then connect it to one concrete priority for this week, and ask them to explain the why back to you in their own words.

When you ask for results, does your team hear only the task, or can they clearly see the larger purpose that makes the effort meaningful?
